Hitting out at his opponents for opposing projects meant for the common man, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday commissioned the local farmers’ market and unveiled a host of projects coinciding with his birthday.
Addressing farmers after former minister and senior Congress leader Luis Alex Cardozo inaugurated the local farmers’ market opposite the district hospital under construction, Sardesai said those who are opposing the project are the very same people who created apprehensions in the minds of the people that he will take over the fields once elected to the legislative assembly.
“It has been four years now for me as an MLA. Have I taken over any fields or dispossessed any farmer of his fields? On the contrary, I am trying to promote agriculture and the farmers’ market so that the farmers get a good price for their produce. Certain people belonging to
the Congress are opposing the projects,” he lambasted.
He pointed out that farm produce, besides ghee manufactured by milk farmers and traditional Goan sausages produced by people of Davondem are some of the things which will be made available at the farmers’ market. “No one will have any right over the place. Neither will anyone be allowed to sell fruits such as apples. This market is only meant for farmers selling locally grown produce,”
he said.
In his address, Congress leader Luis Alex Cardozo complimented the MLA for the market, saying it will go a long way in providing marketing avenues for farm produce. He has called on the authorities to simplify procedures to ensure that farmers receive subsidy and other benefits right at their door steps.
Fertilizers were distributed to the farmers at the local farmers’ meet at the hands of Fr Victor Ferrao.
The MLA later laid the foundation stone for a water nullah near the multi-purpose school in the presence of ward councillor Tito Cardozo. In his address, he slammed Congress leaders for opposing the Borda sewerage service road when the project is being welcomed by all sections of the society.
While the football ground was inaugurated on Tuesday evening, the solid waste transfer stations at around 29 locations across Fatorda were inaugurated in the presence of Congress Mahila leader Monica Dias.
The birthday celebrations culminated with an inter-religious prayer meet late evening at the MLA’s residence.

JICA excavations cause traffic jams in main Margao square

When the skies opened up on Tuesday morning, traffic virtually crawled in the heart of the commercial capital during peak hours. By noon, there was some respite from the heavy rains, but traffic continued to move at a snail’s place around the municipal square and further down the Metropole road triggering rntraffic jams.

the goan I networkMARGAO  The reason is not far to seek. Excavations carried out by JICA to build sewerage chambers all around the Margao municipal garden and down the Metropole road are all sinking. While it is not uncommon to find excavations sinking or settling because of the wet conditions, what’s surprising to note is that there’s no dedicated gang of labourers to repair the damage. And the result is bumper-to-bumper traffic on the busy road.Motorists…
