In a novel protest, people of Calvim held a candle light march at the dusk on Saturday to highlight inconvenience caused to locals due to darkness on the Calvim Bridge.
The bridge which has been in the dark for almost seven months has caused a lot of problems for locals, particularly women while crossing the bridge during the nights.
A lot of anti-social activities take place on the bridge under the cover of darkness in the night.
Congress leader, Amarnath Panjikar blamed the local MLA an
d the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) authorities for the sorry state of affairs of the bridge.
"Aldona MLA, Glen Ticlo has failed to restore the lights on the bridge. He is insensitive towards the problems faced by the people. This darkness has become dangerous as many anti-social activities are taking place on the bridge," said Panjikar, who took the initiative to organise the candle light march.
Most locals who took part in the candle light march demanded that the government should restore the lights on the bridge on top priority.
"In absence of lights, it has become very inconvenient for us to cross the bridge as many times we have to come walking from the Carona junction. Young girls are scared to cross the bridge due to anti-social activities taking place under the cover of darkness," said Joanita Vaz, a local from Calvim.
It may be recalled that the Aldona MLA along with GSIDC officials had inspected the bridge some months back and the MLA had then assured to fix the lights. He had also assured to install CCTV cameras to stop the handiwork of miscreants, who deliberately broke the light fixtures on the bridge.
A local, Ashwin D'Souza said besides people from Calvim, people from other places like Mayem, Bicholim, Pomburpa, Carona and other areas also used the bridge.
"Why should people be made to suffer for the irresponsible attitude of the GSIDC and the local MLA? Government should wake up at least now and act with responsibility," D'Souza said.
