The Salcete Truck Owners Association has urged the government to grant truck owners waiver in the payment of road tax and provide installment facility for the payment of vehicle insurance premium in view of shut down in the mining operations.
Addressing the media, president of Salcete Truck Owners Association Franky Gomes said since the truck owners are going through a financial crisis, the government should intervene and exempt the truck owners from paying road tax. “Last time round when the mining operations were closed down post 2012, the truck owners were given this facility. We request the government to extend the facility once again to the truck owners and mitigate their financial difficulties,” Franky said.
Replying to a question, Franky said the truck owners are not really interested in any government package, saying that their purpose would be served if the government waives the road tax, which works out to around Rs 10,000 a year.
“We would be happy if the government exempts the truck owners from the annual road tax. Similarly, it would go a long way if the government gives the truck owners a quarterly installment facility
to pay the insurance premium,” he said.
