In a significant decision, the Warkhand panchayat has unanimously decided to shut all liquor shops in its jurisdiction and has also resolved not to issue new liquor permits.
Two members put forth this proposition and it was adopted unanimously and without any opposition by the rest of the members.
However, implementing this decision may not be that easy as the Panchayat will have to consider the legal implications of shutting down all liquor shops.
Announcing this decision at a news conference, Warkhand Sarpanch Gauri Joshalkar said the panchayat took the decision to keep villagers away from liquor addiction, and to make Warkhand an ideal village.
“The panchayat has decided to shut down all liquor shops in its jurisdiction, and henceforth, no new permits will be issued to open more liquor shops,” said Joshalkar.
“The panchayat will ascertain the legal implications of this decision and will work towards shutting down the liquor shops completely and legally. The panchayat used to earn Rs 20,000 as revenue from the existing liquor shops in the panchayat’s jurisdiction.”
Joshalkar clarified that while Warkhand does not have a single bar, but Nagzar and other areas have bars which fall in Warkhand panchayat jurisdiction.
“The Panchayat has decided not to have a single bar in its jurisdiction and we appeal to citizens to support us in this historical decision which would go a long way to make our village an ideal one,” said Joshalkar.
“Steps have been taken to increase the revenue of the Panchayat. Businesses which are running in the vicinity of Mopa Airport are yet to pay the revenue to the Warkhand Panchayat and a legal notice would be issued to them,” said Joshalkar.
