The coastal villages of Pernem, most of which fall in the Chief Minister’s Mandrem constituency, could begin sending their garbage to the soon to be commissioned Saligao mixed waste garbage treatment plant.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has called a meeting of all stakeholders on May 26, to discuss the collection and transportation of segregated solid waste to the solid waste management facility at Saligao as well as to review the solid waste management system of the village panchayats.
Among the panchayats which have been called for the meeting include the village panchayats surrounding the garbage plant like Calangute, Candolim, Pilerne, Saligao, Sangolda, Nerul, Reis Magos as well as panchayats which are a little further away in Bardez.
They include Arpora-Nagoa, Parra, Penha de Franca, Socorro, Salvador do Mundo, Anjuna, Guirim, Assagao, Siolim Marna, Siolim Sodiem, Oxel and Ucassaim.
The coastal villages of Pernem like Morjim, Arambol, Mandrem and Querim-Tiracol have also been included in the list.
With the government eager to make the garbage plant work, the meeting is expected to thrash out logistics arrangement to ensure that garbage from these villages reach the plant as well as the villages, including the faltering ones gear up and put in place their garbage collection mechanisms.
Officials of the State Solid Waste Management Cell, which is coordinating the whole process, say that the meeting will help establish exactly how much garbage is being generated in these villages. The Director of panchayats have been asked to furnish details of the quantum of waste of panchayats, mode of transport and the proposed collection plans.
The Goa State Industrial Development Corporation (GSIDC) has been asked to present a plan on the designing of a waste collection mechanism for village panchayats. The meeting will also be attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, Tourism Minister, Science and Technology Minister, Panchayats Minister and Water Resources Minister.
