Waste segregation at source: All eyes on Margao council

the goan I network

MARGAO

Are Margao city fathers really serious about implementing its decision on segregation of waste at source, beginning from February 1?

Consider this. It’s now exactly a fortnight since all the 25 councillors were requested on January 7 to compile data of the number of households and establishments in their respective wards, including housing societies, bulk waste generators, hotels, eateries and institutions.

The compilation of data was ordered by the civic body in the presence of the Director of Municipal Administration R Menaka to get an insight into the number of establishments located in the city in order to make infrastructural provisions required for the segregation of waste at source.

DMA Menaka had a meeting with the Margao city fathers after she personally came to the civic body on

January 7.

Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai had set a week’s deadline for the councillors to submit the data of their respective wards.

A fortnight later, The Goan understands that only eight out of the total 25 city fathers have submitted their data to the municipality.

The Chairperson Babita went into a damage control mode by maintaining the remaining councillors are expected to submit their data in a day or two.

Not taking chances, more so with the city fathers playing truant, the MMC administration has dispatched a provisional list of requirements to the DMA’s office on Monday after Menaka called for the list from the civic body.

“We have submitted a provisional list of the requirements concerning bins for households, housing societies and establishments. The final list will go to the DMA’s office after the civic body receives the data from all the 25 city fathers,” informed a municipal official in the know.

The MMC Chairperson, however, pointed out that though eight councillors

have so far submitted their data, she expects the remaining ones to do so within a day or two.

“So far, we have received the data from the councillors mostly representing the Fatorda area of the civic body. I have personally asked some of the councillors to

submit their data on utmost priority,” the Chairperson said, while virtually conceding that the civic body is running out of time to implement the waste segregation at source from February 1.

MAJOR CHALLENGE BEFORE FEB 1
The Margao Municipal Council has mulled on providing buckets to all the households and establishments, around 40,000 buckets to be precise, in order to collect segregated waste at source
The last time the civic body had distributed bins was in 2013-14 when it had provided two bins each to each of the households across the city to achieve the objective of collecting the waste in segregated form
But with the door-to-door waste segregation in the dumps for a host of reasons, including the civic body’s failure to set up any mechanism in place to transport the segregated waste, the whereabouts of the bins distributed to the households remain unknown
Sources in the civic body, however, stated that since plans have been drawn to make a fresh start on the waste segregation at source front from February 1, the municipality has requested the DMA’s office to make a provision for 40,000 buckets for distribution to the households.
Unlike last time, sources said the civic body has now decided to provide only one bucket to each of the households for the collection of wet waste and to supply gunny bags for dry waste. “This is just a proposal which has been made to the DMA’s office. We will be clear only after all the city fathers submit their data,” the official added.
