In a significant step towards ensuring clean and safe drinking water for local residents, two water filtration plants have been installed at Chapora and Deulwada in Anjuna.
The initiative aims to resolve the long-standing issue of water scarcity in these areas and provide a sustainable solution for clean drinking water.
The newly installed plants, which utilise advanced microfiltration technology, were formally inaugurated by Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo in the presence of panchayat members and officials from the Public Works Department (PWD).
The filtration systems have been strategically placed to treat groundwater extracted from existing borewells before being distributed to local households.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, MLA Delilah Lobo highlighted the importance of these filtration plants in ensuring the safety of drinking water.
Addressing the water shortage crisis
For years, residents of Chapora, Deulwada, and surrounding areas have been grappling with acute water shortages, particularly during the summer months.
In an effort to mitigate the crisis, borewells were dug as a temporary measure to meet the basic water requirements of the community.
However, concerns over water quality necessitated the installation of a proper filtration system to ensure the supply of clean and potable water.
A senior PWD official present at the event explained the operational process of the newly established filtration units. “Water will be pumped from the borewells and then subjected to a rigorous microfiltration process before being distributed to residents. This system will ensure that the local population has access to safe drinking water,” the official stated.
Upcoming water supply project
MLA Delilah Lobo also took the opportunity to announce a major upcoming project aimed at further improving the water supply in the region.
She revealed that a 5.6 MLD water treatment plant is set to be inaugurated by the end of next month.
The new plant will significantly boost water availability and cater to the needs of residents in Assagao, Anjuna-Vagator, and parts of Siolim-Marna.
“The new plant is expected to provide an adequate water supply to a large number of people residing in the coastal belt. We anticipate that the plant will be operational by the end of April, bringing much-needed relief to residents who have been facing water shortages, especially during peak summer,” Lobo said.
