The vendors pointed out that they have been doing business on the Verna bypass road for over a decade and half, eking out a living on the sale of local farm produce.
A vendor Francisca Pereira pointed out that the vendors cultivate the farms and bring the produce to the bypass for sale. “We have not encroached on the roads nor blocked the traffic. We have only put up umbrellas to cover us from the sun. I have been selling the vegetable produce along the bypass for more than 10 years now. We have educated our children from the money accrued after selling the produce,” she said.
Another vendor Agnelo Pereira wondered why the authorities had to order a clamp down on their activity which they have been carrying out since the last 10 years. “Where will we go if the PWD and the police do not allow us to sit along the bypass. The government has not provided us any space to sell our local produce,” he added.
After giving a patient hearing, the Nuvem MLA said he would take up with the PWD officials and along with his San Andre counterpart, Francis Silveira will seek an appointment with the Chief Minister to resolve the issue. “I have been told that the PWD has removed all vendors from the Verna and and Agassaim bypasses. We will make a representation to the Chief Minister to mete out justice to the beleaguered vendors”, Wilfred said.
