MARGAO
The Fatorda police have sought the intervention of the Margao Sub-divisional Magistrate to avert a law and order problem in the SGPDA wholesale fish market after the wholesalers threatened to stop payment of sopo charges from Wednesday.
The police action came after a delegation of wholesale fish traders led by President M Ibrahim lodged a complaint alleging harassment by the sopo contractor Milagres Fernandes.
In the letter, the Fatorda police drew the attention of the Margao SDM to the ongoing issue between the wholesalers and the sopo contractor. They warned the issue may snowball into a major law and order situation.
Earlier in the day, a delegation of the wholesale traders led by President M Ibrahim lodged a complaint with the Fatorda police alleging harassment by the sopo contractor.
Ibrahim later told the media that the wholesalers will stop payment to the sopo contractor from tomorrow if the latter does not produce the letter from the SGPDA that authorizes him to collect the fees.
Charging the SGPDA of failure to tender the sopo collection contract, Ibrahim demanding to know how come Milagres is collecting it without any tender.
