Will agitate on streets if schools reopened: NCP

MAPUSA
Stating that the Covid pandemic was at its peak in the State, the NCP on Monday strongly opposed any move to reopen schools in the State on October 15.

“The NCP strongly objects to any plans to reopen schools from October 15 as it would put the lives of children in danger. If this plan goes ahead, the NCP along with the parents will agitate on the streets,” said NCP State General Secretary Sanjay Barde, while addressing a news conference in Mapusa on Monday.

Mapusa NCP Block President Adv Gautam Pednekar, Pandurang Waradkar, Anil Kerkar and Riyaz Sheikh were also present at the news conference.

"Around 35-40,000 people in Goa have tested positive for coronavirus and 460 have died. There are around 1,735 Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary schools in Goa.”

“The government will put the lives of children at stake by reopening them,” said Barde.

Mapusa NCP Block President Adv Gautam Pednekar said since the Covid pandemic is a national emergency, the decision to reopen schools should have been taken by the Central government.

“Instead, the Centre has pushed its responsibility on state governments. In comparison to the national average of Covid infections and Covid-related death rates, Goa is at the number one spot in the country and at the same time, at the bottom in terms of recoveries.”

“The situation will only get worse if the State government reopens schools,” said Pednekar.
