The PWD had to rely on a police force to connect a 3-year-old water pipeline to the overhead water tank at Abhinav Housing complex at Gopalnagar-Porvorim following strong protest from locals in the area.
The pipeline was connected to the overhead tank to supply water to residents of Halliwada.
Residents of Gopalnagar had objected to PWD contractors from connecting the pipeline to the overhead water tank on September 30, because supply would significantly reduce in their area.
Following a complaint from residents of Halliwada, BJP party workers spoke to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar and narrated the situation.
The CM and Pauskar later directed the PWD executive engineer to connect the pipeline to the overhead water tank at Abhinav Housing complex to supply water to residents of Halliwada.
Accordingly, PWD officials and BJP party workers led by Kishor Asnodkar went to Gopalnagar on Monday afternoon to connect the pipeline to the overhead water tank in the presence of a strong police force.
Later speaking to media persons, BJP leader Kishor Asnodkar said the water pipeline had been placed three years ago to supply water from the overhead water tank at Abhinav Housing complex to the Halliwada.
“However, due to objections from residents of Gopalnagar, the PWD could not connect this pipeline to the overhead water tank.”
“Residents of Halliwada are facing acute water shortage and depend on water tankers. When the residents narrated their grievances to the Porvorim BJP Mandal, the matter was brought to the attention of the chief minister and PWD minister, who directed the PWD executive engineer at Porvorim to immediately connect the pipeline to the overhead water tank,” said Asnodkar.
When contacted, PWD Executive Engineer Nitin Nevrekar confirmed that the PWD had connected the Halliwada pipeline to the overhead water tank at Abhinav Housing complex as per directions from the chief minister and PWD minister.
“The chief minister had ordered Povorim police to provide security to avoid any untoward incident,” said Nevrekar.
