The Winter Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly will be held in the first week of January, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar announced on Tuesday.

Speaking to media persons, Tawadkar said that the dates for the week-long winter session would be announced shortly.

During this session, the State government is expected to bring in a Regulation to regularize the houses of Goans on the comunidade land, as declared by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

Tawadkar too, extending support to the government decision, said that he himself had put up a proposal to protect the demolition of houses in Canacona that are on comunidade land and have already received notices.

“Around 70 houses have received demolition notices. However, these people went to Court and managed to get a stay. These are our Goans and we need to protect them,” the Speaker said.

Tawadkar, Canacona MLA, said that almost 60 per cent of Agonda village comprises comunidade area and all those residing there are Niz Goemkar.

The Chief Minister, who is monitoring the issue closely, had said earlier that around 1,000 houses, located on comunidade land, will have to be demolished in Canacona, Saligao, Pernem, Mapusa alone.

Responding to a question on political reservation to Schedule Tribe (ST) communities, Tawadkar said that the government is committed to ensure that reservation is granted before the next State Assembly elections in 2027.

He said that a delegation led by the Chief Minister will soon be meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the demand.
