With virtually no action from authorities to repair the dilapidated road leading to the hilly areas of Salgini, Verlem and Tudov in Netravali village, a group of residents of Salgini on Saturday took up the task of filling up the potholes and removing the mud which had gathered on the road during the monsoons.
The road to these hilly areas is in bad shape, making it difficult to commute to and from these remote places.
Concerned about the bad condition of the road, KTC authorities had even threatened to stop the lone KTC bus from plying to and from the village in the interests and safety of passengers and KTC staff.
The threat to discontinue the lone KTC bus service had upset villagers and political leaders in the constituency managed to persuade KTC officials to continue with the bus service.
Local MLA Prasad Gaonkar and the deputy collector had also visited the village to ascertain the road condition and during their visit, had assured villagers that the main road proceeding to the hilly areas would be immediately repaired.
However, PWD authorities did not act soon enough to repair the road and fed up with the assurances, a group of residents decided to take action on Saturday and filled some potholes, while also removing mud which had accumulated on the road during the monsoons.
The action of the residents was appreciated by Netravali Deputy Sarpanch Abhijit Desai, who lauded the villagers for their good work.
Desai said the Netravali panchayat had already written to the PWD to undertake urgently repair the dilapidated roads in the
village.
