According to Porvorim Police, Sunita Lamani was returning home as usual along the walkway after dropping
her niece at a ‘Balwadi’ at 9 am, when she was apparently assaulted by an unidentified
person. Police said Sunita died on the spot due to grievous injuries she had sustained, while the accused left the body and fled from the scene. “A person carrying a cylinder
for his customer noticed the body lying by the side of the wall of an abandoned house and raised an alarm. Nearby residents rushed to the spot and informed the matter to the family of the deceased and Porvorim Police,” said the police. Superintendent of Police
Umesh Gaonker, DySP Nelson Albuquerque and Police Inspector Rajesh Kumar rushed
to the spot along with other staff and conducted the inquest. Sniffer dogs were pressed
into service, but could not provide any clue.
The body was sent to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for post-mortem and the report was awaited. Speaking to The Goan, DySP Albuquerque said there is a dark mark on the neck of the deceased and the gold chain was found missing. “But the gold earrings were found intact and this indicates that the motive of murder was not robbery.
The mobile phone of the deceased was found hardly 15 feet from the body,” he added.
He further informed that the deceased, Sunita Lamani, used to drop her niece at Balwadi at 9 am and bring her back at 12.30 pm. “The murder must have taken place between 9 am and 9.30 am. The accused should be a known person and was waiting for her,” suspected DySP Albuquerque. “The very fact that the mobile phone and the footwear
of the deceased were found 5 metres away from the body indicates that there was resistance from the lady,” said Albuqurque. “The parents of the deceased are labourers and natives of Hubli, but are presently residing in a rented house in Quitla since the last
20 years. The exact cause of death will be known only after receiving the post-mortem
report,” added DySP Albuquerque. Police Inspector Rajesh Kumar is investigating the case.
