PANAJI: Acting on a complaint filed by a government employee, the Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police has arrested a woman for allegedly hacking into an e-mail account and impersonating the complainant.

The woman was subsequently released on bail.

The accused is alleged to have unethically obtained access to the complainant's e-mail account and is further alleged to have used the account to send malicious and objectionable content to the complainant's colleagues, police sources said.

The complainant, also the victim, is an employee in the Department of Transport. According to police officials, the victim's email account was hacked last month. The email account was then used to send e-mails with allegations and rumours about the victim's colleagues to those in the victim's mailing list, a Cyber Crime Cell officer said.

After learning of the hacking, the victim immediately informed the Cyber Crime Cell, which registered a case under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act. Police traced the IP address from where the email was sent and discovered that the e-mail was sent from a phone that belonged to the woman.
