On the controversy and misunderstanding arising due to the mention of Chatrapathi Shivaji during his sermon, Fr Bolmax Pereira, Parish Priest of Chicalim, issued a clarification by stating that his statement was taken out of context and misinterpreted.
He said that the purpose and intent of making a mention of the great national hero and valiant warrior during the sermon was to tell devotees and viewers that Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj was revered by people across the country and abroad, cutting across religion, caste, creed, language, etc and hence attributing him to only one religion would reduce his stature and greatness amongst people of other faith.
“We have grown up studying Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a warrior hero in history lessons and the way he united all people and served all people without any discrimination, the way he protected his kingdom by fighting with valour against the invaders, for which we respect him and always we will,” said Fr Pereira.
However, Fr Pereira expressed his shock to learn that his sermon was selectively taken out of context to show only one part of the statement and the other part praising his valour and heroism wherein, he protected his people and his kingdom and stood against invaders, was maliciously omitted, which he said he believed was to incite anger and create enmity between communities.
“If any individual or organisation has been hurt due to this episode and misunderstanding, I express my deepest regret. And I would like to assure all my Hindu brothers and sisters that I had no intention to hurt anyone's sentiments whatsoever. I hope and pray that the long-lasting bond between communities that has existed since centuries is maintained and grows stronger,” Fr Pereira said.
