Vasco BJP MLA Carlos Almeida on Friday assured that the long-pending work on the new Vasco fire station building would begin by September.

Speaking to reporters after distributing immunity boosting powder and N95 masks to staff at the Vasco fire station, Almeida also assured that work on the new fish market would start in 15 days.

"We have had a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and he has assured to take up work on a new fire station building after the monsoons. The file is now with the finance secretary. I feel bad that work on this vital fire station building has not begun since the last four years,” said Almeida.

"As regards the Vasco fish market, the GSUDA has already issued the work order for the new Vasco fish market and the place will be cleaned. Work to put up a shed has already begun and work on the new fish market will begin in 15 days,” he added.

Vasco Fire Station incharge Francisco Mendes said the fire department had worked overtime in the aftermath of Cyclone Tauktae.

"We had nearly 169 emergency calls during this period. While equipment needs maintenance after use, it is difficult for the staff to operate from a single room. Our staff has done great job in handling the emergency situation.”

“We have now been assured that work on the new fire station building will begin in September," said Mendes.

BJP Yuva Morcha member Kiran Naik said the BJYM along with Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida had distributed immunity boosters and N95 masks to all frontline workers of Vasco fire station.

He added that a plantation drive was also carried out in the surroundings of the Vasco fire station.
