MARGAO: The Public Works Department has started work of restoring the badly damaged Rawanfond road on Saturday taking advantage of the dry spell, but the National Highways Authority of India and its contractor hasn’t yet made their presence felt around the Margao Municipal Council square to restore the road washed away in the rains.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat descended on the Rawanfond road on Saturday morning to monitor the progress of road repair work as the entire stretch is lying virtually unmotorable because of craters and potholes.
Kamat told the media that he had impressed, rather insisted, upon the PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar to take up the Rawanfond road on a top priority given the extent of the damage.
“The PWD officials and workers had moved into Rawanfond late last night since carrying the road repair would have disturbed the heavy traffic plying on the road,” Kamat said, adding that work of hot-mixing started Saturday and will continue till the road is tarred.
When his attention was drawn to the badly damaged MMC Square road maintained by the NHAI, the Margao MLA said repair work should start immediately taking advantage of the dry spell. “The MMC square road is in real bad shape. I had discussed the issue with NH officials and I hope they take up the work on a war-footing,” he added. While labourers engaged by the NHAI have lifted the gravel giving temporary respite to two-wheeler riders, motorists are looking forward to the early restoration of the badly damaged road. It is not clear whether the NHAI will wait for the contractor to carry out the repair work as per the terms of the contract or will start the same departmentally and then recover the money from the contractor.
