Xeldem locals hit the street against project

SANGUEM

Locals from Xeldem-Tilamol in Quepem taluka have objected to the ongoing construction of the building project in the village.

The villagers led an agitation in front of the Xeldem Panchayat on Thursday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the construction license, which the panchayat had issued to the project despite stiff opposition from villagers.

The villagers pointed out that the construction of the project was kept on hold since the past few years following opposition by villagers on grounds that the project would lead to the blockage of the only road used by villagers to proceed to their houses.

Locals claim that there are around 50 residential houses in the locality with a population of around 200 people.

Earlier this month, villagers at the gram sabha had even requested the panchayat not to issue the construction licence to the project until the plot owned by the builder is demarcated, leaving aside the traditional access used by the villagers.

Despite objections raised by villagers, a group of seven panchayat members reportedly got the resolution passed, leaving aside the sarpanch and three others panchayat members in the opposition.

The villagers have now pinned hopes on the sarpanch who has assured the villagers of seeking legal advice in the matter and to verify as to what action the panchayat could initiate and withdraw the construction license issued to the project.
