Furtado has warned the bypass contractor not to take up further construction work or land filling before compiling data on the number of flyovers, underpasses and culverts proposed to be built along the Navelim-Salpem lake-River Sal stretch. “Earlier this month, I had directed the contractor to stop work of land filling near the Salpem lake. But after three days two truck loads of mud were dumped again at the site. I have told him not to carry out any more land filling without my permission,” Avertano told The Goan.
The Navelim MLA said, “I intend to hold a meeting with the villagers of Navelim, who are a worried lot over the alignment of the bypass and the land filling activity.”
A week ago, residents of Navelim had stopped work on the land filing activity for the bypass near the Salpem lake, while demanding immediate scrapping of the project, saying it will cause destruction to the water bodies and ecology.
The Navelim MLA, however, soon made a statement that he has himself stopped work on the land filling work as he too is in favour of flyovers and underpasses along the stretch passing through his Navelim constituency.
The PWD is also yet to accommodate and rehabilitate the occupiers of the two houses at neighbouring Telaulim village till date, even after inspection of the houses and the bypass route by PWD Minister and the Fisheries Minister.
