Mohamed Danish, a youth detained by Panaji police after holding a ‘Free Omar Khalid’ placard at Azad Maidan on Saturday, was released after furnishing a bond before the Sub‑Divisional Magistrate.
Police sources said the detention was effected under preventive provisions as no cognisable offence was made out. Officers maintained his actions could have potentially triggered a law‑and‑order situation.
Danish was part of a gathering at Azad Maidan to celebrate the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The event, organised by youth supportive of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), had witnessed commotion. Police personnel escorted Danish out of the group and took him to the station, despite legal representatives insisting he had committed no offence.
His arrest prompted slogans demanding his release from several youth and activists present at the venue, adding tension to a gathering that otherwise sought to mark Pradhan’s resignation, which followed weeks of nationwide protests.
The protest also carried satirical undertones with participants distributing ‘Melody’ toffees in reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifting the confectionery to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his recent European visit.
