A youth from Balli in Quepem was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attacking a 66-year-old woman tourist from the Czech Republic at Agonda.
Sources said the woman was found on Monday at an isolated spot on a hillock with bleeding head injuries.
She was first taken to the Canacona Community Health Centre and later shifted to the South Goa District Hospital in Margao. She is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Police said the tourist had an argument with an unknown man, who then assaulted her using his hands and a stone, causing serious injuries.
A complaint was registered at the Canacona Police Station on Tuesday and a case under Section 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was filed.
Police said they had very little information at first, as the victim could give only a brief description of the attacker.
Despite this, a team led by PI Praveen Gawas, under the supervision of SDPO Nilesh Rane, began an immediate investigation. Officers collected local intelligence, checked CCTV footage in the village and traced the suspect’s movements.
After sustained efforts and technical analysis, police identified and arrested Rohan Velip (22) from Benordem in Balli. During questioning, he admitted his role in the attack. Further investigation is under way.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, DySP Nilesh Rane said the quick action by Canacona police shows Goa Police’s commitment to tourist safety.
