Zero tolerance to flooding in Mapusa: Falari
De-silting of nullahs, drains begin in city

Monsoon may be a good three months away but for Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sandeep Falari taking a head start will go a long way to reduce flooding in Mapusa in the wet season.
On Tuesday, Falari began the de-silting of major nullahs and drains in Ektanagar/Dattawadi and expects to clean all the gutters in the city in a month and a half.
“Early start to de-silting work will help us to face the monsoons better. The perennial flooding of the city, especially Mapusa market will be taken care of this time around,” Falari said.
The chairperson has drawn up a date-wise schedule to focus on all the wards, giving five days for each ward while reserving Sundays for the market area. The work which started on March 1 will end on April 17.
The 20 wards comprising the Mapusa municipality have been divided into four groups with five wards in each group.
“Ten labourers have been allotted for each ward in each group, who will clean all the drains in that ward for five days,” the chairperson stated.
So on a given day, 40 labourers will be engaged in four different wards clearing the clogged drains in different parts of Mapusa.
Further on Sundays, all the 40 labourers will be working only in the Mapusa market clearing the drains inside the market area. For seven Sundays, the labourers will focus only on Mapusa market.
“There will be zero tolerance to flooding in Mapusa this monsoon. I will personally monitor the ongoing de-silting work in the city,” Falari promised.
While drawing up the de-silting schedule, care has been taken so that wards on higher altitude are cleared first and gradually clearing wards on lower altitude.
