When contacted, Sudhir Parab, Opa WTP assistant engineer, said the water level at Opa had dropped to 170 centimetres.
“The water level should not drop below 2 metres. On Saturday, it had dropped to 1.70 reduce level (above sea level), following which WRD released water from the bandharas, which helped maintain the level,” Parab said.
To a question where exactly the bandharas were opened to release water in main stream, Parab said it was somewhere in Khandepar river.
“We had to restrict supply of water as the level dropped, and we hope the level will be maintained to cater to the needs of the people,” he said.
It may be recalled that last week the water level had dropped below normal, and water from a mining pit was pumped to maintain the level.
“It was continued till Sunday, and if it has stopped, then we won’t be in a position to maintain the level,” Parab said.
He informed that presently water from Selaulim river and from mining pits is pumped into the river flowing to Opa. The practice of pumping water from Ganje river is on.
At Opa plant, 140 MLD water is taken for filtering and almost 138 MLD is distributed every day.
According to Opa officials, they are trying every option to maintain the level. But if it doesn\'t rain in coming days, then they will be in real trouble and will have to restrict distribution of water on a daily basis.
