The construction of an alleged illegal structure in the open space on the passenger platform at the Mapusa bus stand has raised eyebrows as it is bound to obstruct movement and cause inconvenience to passengers.
A structure resembling a kiosk made of rods and pipes and zinc sheets has been erected on platform no 5 of the KTC bus stand in Mapusa allegedly without any approvals and in gross violation of all rules and regulation.
Two sofas of concrete stationed on the platform and meant for the passengers to rest have been removed to make way for the structure.
“As per the directives of the High Court no public places are allowed to be encroached upon and authorities have been given directions to initiate immediate action in the matter,” said Pravin Asolkar of Mapusa Youth.
Incidentally, the Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) has handed over the open space to a franchisee.
“The possession of space for the franchisee of Harman Chahawala at KTCL bus stand Mapusa is handed over to Tejash Kochrekar as is where is basis,” says a note signed by KTCL labour welfare officer.
According to Asolkar, the illegal structure has been erected by a highly influential person for the benefit of another influential person to carry out business activities.
Mapusa Youth’s Uday Hirve said the concerned authorities should ensure that no more structures are permitted at the bus stand as it was already congested with a number of shops making it difficult for passengers to find a suitable place to rest.
“This platform should be kept as an open space so that the travelling public gets ample of space to move around and to rest,” Hirve said.
The Mapusa Youth in a representation has requested the KTC Chairman to remove the illegal structure at the KTC bus stand which is creating obstruction and nuisance to the public visiting the bus stand.
