All Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association President and Jose Philip D’Souza on Friday said that the start of the fishing season has been bad and that due to bad weather, not many trawlers have been able to venture into the sea.
D’Souza said for the first time, the boats could not venture for around a month and that almost all trawler owners had suffered huge losses.
“Today the fishing industry is suffering as almost all trawler owners are in deep trouble. Every trawler has around 50 workers onboard. They have expenses like diesel, food for workers, their weekly allowance, salaries and with such a bad start to the fishing season, I think every trawler owner is having a loss of around Rs 10 lakh as of now”, said D’Souza.
D’Souza said,“the government must work out some incentive for trawler owners like subsidies or compensation quickly”.
