In a decisive step towards addressing dust pollution, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has adopted advanced technology to monitor and curb dust pollution due to transportation of ore across the State.
The Board has recently installed 22 continuous online ambient air quality monitoring stations, ensuring real-time tracking of air quality and facilitating swift action to mitigate pollution.

The monitoring stations, operational and under the supervision of GSPCB officials, have been strategically positioned in key junctions and densely populated areas of both North and South Goa, which are particularly susceptible to dust pollution due to transportation of ore.
"The instruments provide direct, real-time readings of ambient air quality across various locations in the mining belt," explained Mahesh Patil, Chairman of the GSPCB.
"This allows us to identify and address spikes in dust levels or other air quality issues immediately," he added.
The continuous monitoring stations are concentrated in Sanguem, Dharbandora and Bicholim talukas, which are the primary hubs of mining activity.
In South Goa, stations have been placed along routes in Rivona, Zambaulim, and Tilamol, while additional stations are located in Sanguem city, ITI area of Cacora, Curchorem junction, Sanvordem junction, Karmanem, and Dhabal junction.
In North Goa, key areas such as Usgao, Dharbandora, and the jetties at Honda, Bicholim, and Sanquelim have also been covered.
Real-time monitoring

Using advanced continuous monitoring systems, the GSPCB collects automatic real-time data on air pollutants.
This data is analysed to ensure compliance with air quality standards and to implement immediate corrective measures when necessary.
By leveraging technology, the GSPCB aims to ensure sustainable mining practices while safeguarding the environment.
The data collected from these stations will also serve as a valuable resource for framing policies and regulations.
With these measures in place, the State is making strides toward balancing economic activity with environmental stewardship, setting a precedent for responsible mining practices.
