Abandoned vehicles to be auctioned, owners get 6 mths to submit claims

PANAJI

The North Goa District Magistrate's Office has announced plans to auction unclaimed vehicles to free up parking spaces and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

In a proclamation issued recently, the office has called upon persons with an interest in any abandoned or unattended vehicles located in Bardez and Tiswadi to submit their claims within six months to the respective Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate offices.

It stated that if no objections/claims are received within the stipulated time, the vehicles shall be forfeited in favour of the State Government and shall be disposed by public auction as provided under the law. No further claims will be entertained from anyone and the proceeds shall be forfeited to the government.

“The Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic-North) Altinho has submitted a list of abandoned/ unattended vehicles…the said vehicles are breeding grounds for mosquitoes which cause a rise in vector-borne diseases and thus leads to health hazards to the general public,” reads the notice. The lists of all identified vehicles are available with the respective SDM offices, it added.

The CM had last year announced plans to scrap the vehicles, particularly those abandoned on government properties. The decision also comes as the government-appointed agency is soon to commission the State’s first vehicle scrapping facility.
