The Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday passed the amendment to the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996, which prohibits the dumping of garbage in public as well as private spaces and empowers the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to monitor waste generated by industries via a digital platform.
The amendment also provides for the impounding of vehicles used for illegal dumping of waste in the State.
The amendment brings industry, hotels and restaurants, which generate more than 50 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste every day, under the ambit of the law.
It also brings in more items within the definition of non-biodegradable waste such as: metal, paper, multi-layer plastic, rubber, glass wool, fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP), glass fibre, paper-based beverage cartons (tetra packs), leather, wood utilised for packaging, corrugated boxes and cardboard, jute and woven bags.
