Ramanagar police have seized over two tonnes of beef at Anmod check-post that was being transported to Goa after intercepting three vehicles late Saturday night.
Five persons have been arrested in this connection and three vehicles have been seized.
According to information received from Ramnagar police, acting on a tip off officials intercepted three vehicles that were heading to Goa at Anmod check-post. On checking it was found that 2,220 kg of suspected cow meat was being transported from Alnavar in the three vehicles.
Five persons -- Sadiq Abdul Khader (25), Rajasab Jangisab Haragi (30), Illiyas Hajrat Bilal (30), Daval Malik Mukhtar (31) and Sahid Gudusab Shindodi (29) -- were arrested. The three vehicles were also seized while the beef was buried in the forest.
The Goa government has banned in-bound transportation of cattle and buffalo as a precaution against the fast spreading lumpy skin disease affecting the bovine population across the State.
The North Goa collector had issued the order prohibiting the entry of the livestock from other States of India.
Recently, around 15 cases of lumpy skin disease were detected in Goa of which eight had been confirmed as positive. Maximum of these cases were from Ponda while a few were also found in Bicholim.
