Church team meets Env Secretary over double tracking fears

PANAJI

A four-member delegation from the Diocesan Commission for Ecology (DCE) met Environment Secretary Arun Kumar Mishra at the Secretariat on Wednesday to voice their concerns over the double tracking project.

The DCE led by Convenor Fr Bolmax Pereira PhD and comprising Miguel Braganza, Joshua Dmello and Yannah Marchon, explained that a letter was written to all 40 MLAs on April 10 to express their anguish about ecological degradation and suffering of the people in Goa in the context of double-tracking of railway line from Tinaighat to Vasco and other issues.

“The environment secretary had a very positive approach. He said that his office has taken note of the contents of the DCE letter and that the environment minister himself had directed his office to have a follow-up with the DCE,” said Fr Pereira.

“We have appreciated the environment secretary for responding to the letter and calling us for this short discussion. The DCE will now discuss the issues raised in the letter dated April 10, flag the possible actionable points and articulate the issues.”

“In the next follow-up, the DCE will draw up the concrete ecological demands before the government. The DCE will now prepare a comprehensive eco-demand to be submitted to the government through the environment department,” Fr Pereira added.
