Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has raised serious concern over the privatization of berths no 10 and 11 of Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), which will certainly affect the livelihood of thousands of people, especially the locals from his constituency.
Addressing a press conference in Vasco on Thursday along with the members of Mormugao Stevedores Association and others, Amonkar has demanded clarity on memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the MPA and Delta Infralogistics.
Amonkar said, “Monopoly to any organisation will affect business and lead to closure of many other companies thereby leading to mass unemployment.”
Amonkar along with president of Mormugao Stevedores Association Lindon Rodrigues, proprietor of Parkkot Maritima Agencies Pvt Ltd Vinod Parkkot, Custom House agents, Mario Furtado and representative of Bhavani Shipping Navin Shetty called upon Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and handed over a memorandum requesting him to look into the matter and intervene in the privatization of general cargo at berths no10 and 11.
“The Mormugao Stevedores Association have raised apprehension and concern with respect to MPA’s move of signing an MoU with a private party privatising general cargo berths no10 and 11 which will certainly affect the livelihood of thousands of people, especially the locals from Mormugao constituency attached to the stevedoring activities at the port as they will displaced by the new private entrant. The state government should immediately intervene in the matter and stop the privatization of the berths, giving relief to the employees who are working with stevedoring companies for the last several years”, informed Amonkar.
