A police constable and a lifeguard have been arrested on charges of attempting to abduct a one-and-half-year-old boy from Sukalwada-Korgao on Friday evening.
Providing more details of the incident, Pernem police said two persons, Sanjay Narvekar (47) of Shiroda in Vengurla-Maharashtra, who is employed as a lifeguard, along with Nikesh Chari, of Korgao and serving as an IRB Police Costable at the Ribandar Camp, had gone on a motorcycle towards the house of the toddler.
Narvekar is reported to have entered the house of the toddler and try to kidnapped him from the lawful custody of his grandfather. He then rushed towards Chari, who was ready on the motorcycle and to flee away along with Narvekar and minor Boy.
However, the grandfather and another housemate raised an alarm, alerting neighbours and locals who rescued the toddler and nabbed Narvekar, while Chari managed to flee away from the spot on a motorcycle.
The Pernem police was notified and a police team took custody of Narvekar.
An FIR under Sections 137 (2) r/w 3 (5) of BNS 2023 and Sec 8 of the Goa Children’s Act was registered at the Pernem police station and investigation was taken up.
During the investigation, Narvekar disclosed the involvement of Chari. Police then took Chari into custody and later arrested him. Police also attached a motorcycle and a car which was also a part of the offence.
Police said both the accused have confessed to the offence and interrogations were in progress to find out the exact motive of the crime.
Police said a report will be submitted against the accused, Chari, for appropriate disciplinary action and added that more sections will be added as the investigation progresses.
Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of Pernem PI Sachin Lokre and the guidance of Pernem SDPO Pernem Dalvi.
