After being detained and questioned for over five hours on Sunday, a furious Arpora“Nagoa Sarpanch Roshan Redkar lashed out at the BJP and announced his decision to quit the party, vowing to defeat its candidate in the 2027 Calangute Assembly elections.
Redkar, who had earlier issued a demolition notice to the controversial Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, received loud applause from hundreds of villagers who gathered outside the Anjuna Police Station in his support.
“I will resign from the BJP from today and will ensure the BJP candidate in Calangute is defeated in 2027,” Redkar declared, accusing those in power “ particularly Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, without naming him “ of causing him “distress and harassment”.
Redkar reiterated that the nightclub had no construction licence, prompting the panchayat to issue a demolition order after passing a formal resolution. “The club was running for several years. Licences were renewed as routine. But when I realised there was no construction licence, I discussed the matter with the members and then issued the demolition notice,” he said.
Once considered a close aide of Lobo, Redkar has recently fallen out with the MLA, leading to a series of confrontations.
Political circles have also been abuzz with speculation that Redkar has been eyeing the Calangute Assembly ticket, adding another layer to the unfolding political drama after the nightclub fire tragedy.
