While the Saligao Solid Waste Management Facility (SWMF) has emerged as a crucial solution in addressing the escalating garbage crisis in the State, the concern of foul odour emanating from the plant has caused inconvenience to residents of Calangute and Candolim.
Residents residing in Saipem, Candolim, and Gauravaddo, Calangute, situated in close proximity to the waste treatment plant, have been particularly affected by the unpleasant odour.
Antonio De Souza, a Gauravaddo resident, expressed the issue, highlighting the variability of the odour depending on the wind patterns.
“It's not always, but we do get the stink which is nauseating. It mostly depends on the wind pattern. We are right at the foot of the garbage treatment plant and therefore more susceptible to the stink,” said De Souza, reflecting the sentiments of many residents in the vicinity.
Vishnu Naik, a resident of Saipem, further substantiated the complaints, emphasising the exacerbation of the odour during the summer months.
“We get the foul smell on a regular basis, more so when they start operating the digesters. The stink is worse during the months of April and May,” Naik remarked.
The persistent odour nuisance has prompted concerns among residents, urging authorities to address the matter promptly.
