The Goa government is targeting to get an ambitious figure of 1,200 electric buses to ply on Goa's roads in the next five years, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has claimed.
According to Godinho, the Union Heavy Industries Ministry has been petitioned to allot 1,200 electric buses for Goa.
Already 100 e-buses have been sanctioned and the Centre's nod for another 250 is on its way, Godinho said.
The Transport Minister also said that a proposal for setting up charging stations wherever the State-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has space and properties has been submitted.
Godinho said, in addition to these electric buses allocated by the Centre, the State government will also buy diesel buses on a need basis simultaneously.
Should the plan for 1,200 buses on Goa's roads fructify in five years, it would account for almost 80 per-cent of Goa's public transport buses.
Godinho said, a policy to regulate public transport vehicles is also in the making.
Last week, Godinho had inducted 15 e-buses into the fleet of the KTC, which now has a total of 50 e-buses in its total fleet of approximately 550 buses.
