The capability of the Goa police to create a 'green corridor' between Goa Medical College, Bambolim and the Dabolim airport, got its first real time test on Sunday and the men-in-uniform passed with flying colours.
The 19-year-old brain dead person who gave new lease of life to 4 people through his donated organs hails from Uttar Pradesh. He was admitted with severe head injury after falling from height. After the doctors declared the patient brain dead, family of the patient agreed to SOTTO nodal officer’s appeal for organ donations.
Organs harvested were successfully transported to the airport via the impromptu 'green corridor' created by the police. The heart and liver were transported via Dabolim Airport to Mumbai and Ahmedabad respectively. The heart will give new lease of life to 51-year-old Mumbai woman while liver will be transplanted in 47-year-old man at CIMS Hospital Ahmedabad. Both the kidneys have been allotted to patients in Goa. Organs are allocated to patients based on nationally maintained waiting list.
“A brain stem dead donor can save upto 8 lives through organ donation and help 75 others through tissue donation,” informed authorities.
SOTTO-Goa Joint Director, Dr Preeti Varghese coordinated the entire operation of harvesting and then transporting the harvested organs.
