The Goa Road Safety Forum (GRSF) has sought the Department of Urban Department’s intervention to ensure properly demarcated parking spaces in municipal areas while citing that incorrect or disorganized parking is one of the reasons for vehicular accidents.
“Goa is witnessing an unprecedented number of vehicular accidents. One of the reasons is the incorrect or disorganized parking observed in municipal areas. Vehicles are parked in any direction and at any available spot without applying thought for the convenience of other people,” reads an email communiqué to the minister and the officials concerned with the department.
The forum defended the vehicle owners stating they are not entirely to be blamed as Goa being a tourist state has more visitors than locals.
“At any given location, the vehicle owner should have clear guidelines regarding the parking formation. Parking next to commercial establishments can either be angular, parallel, or perpendicular based on various factors such as road width and vehicular density.
"However, the formation should be clearly indicated by way of signboards and road markings. Likewise, sufficient space should be marked for two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking,” it further said.
The GRSF has thus recommended that the department instructs all municipalities in Goa to ensure every parking bay has such indications on parking with instructions on compliance in a defined time frame.
