During a rally through the Mapusa market, Congress candidate for North Goa, Ramakant Khalap didn't mince words as he criticised sitting MP and Union Minister Shripad Naik for the dismal state of the market.
Khalap lamented the lack of amenities, which he argued were essential for both buyers and sellers, as well as for the overall business community of the city. He pointed out the neglect of the market, emphasising its significance not just for locals but also for tourists.
Expressing his disappointment, Khalap asserted that it seemed Naik had never even visited the Mapusa market. He accused the current MP of neglecting the market, alleging that no funds had been allocated for its development through either central funds or MPLAD funds.
Promising to be a voice for the people in Parliament, Khalap pledged to address their concerns and advocate for their issues if elected. He acknowledged Naik as a good man but criticised his lack of action on behalf of Goa in Parliament.
During his rally, Khalap appealed for support from those visiting the market on its bustling market day. He greeted shopkeepers, sellers, and visitors, seeking their endorsement for his candidacy.
In a subsequent rally, Khalap outlined his vision for Mapusa's development, pledging to devise a comprehensive plan within his first year in office. He highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a ring road to alleviate congestion.
Khalap decried the current state of the market, citing inadequate facilities for vendors and buyers alike. He recalled proposing a development plan for Mapusa two decades ago, which, despite being submitted to the state government and municipality, had not been acted upon.
Additionally, Khalap addressed environmental concerns, including the pollution of the Mapusa River with sewage, and advocated for beautification efforts to restore the city's former glory.
Support for Khalap's candidacy echoed among the populace, with Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira noting positive feedback from marketgoers. Ferreira criticised Naik's tenure, highlighting his dual role as MP and Tourism Minister, yet lamenting the lack of substantial projects for the Mapusa market.
Accompanied by volunteers from the Congress party, AAP, and Shiv Sena, Khalap's rally underscored the urgent need for change and revitalisation in Mapusa.
