Local INDIA leaders targeted Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar in Canacona, as part of efforts to build an anti-BJP wave and to drum up support for their candidate, Capt Viriato Fernandes.

Addressing a public meeting in Canacona, the leaders claimed they were uniting the non-BJP voters and said Tawadkar’s tactics to pressurise opposition parties would only backfire.

In a scathing attack on BJP, AAP Leader Sandesh Telekar said BJP’s corruption had penetrated from top to bottom.

“BJP has destroyed democracy and corruption has spread everywhere in the nation, including Goa. Our Canacona MLA and Speaker has himself proved beyond doubt that Prime Minister Awas Yojna to build houses for the needy has failed miserably, forcing him to introduce ‘Shram-Dham’, a private scheme whereby money is demanded from various stakeholders for utilisation to build these houses,” said Telekar.

“Let this government show a single house which this government has built for the needy under Prime Minister Awas Yojna, which the PM himself announced the construction of over 4 crores of houses in the country.”

Echoing similar thoughts, Goa Forward Party Environment Cell Convenor Vikas Bhagat said: “If the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna is already there to provide government funds to build houses for needy people, why is there a show to create houses for the needy under the so-called Shram-Dham scheme?”

Former CMC Chairperson Rajendra Desai said INDI Alliance leaders were being targeted and approached with goodies to work for BJP candidates.

Goa Forward Party spokesman Mohandas Lolienkar accused the BJP of fake appraisals of development, adding that the little development had been at the cost of levying a huge debt.

Firebrand Congress leader Janardhan Bhandari questioned the threat posed by the BJP to every institution in the country.

Others who addressed the meeting included GFP Spokesman Prashant Naik, former Agonda sarpanch Pramod Phaldessai, former Shristhal sarpanch Pandurang (Datta) Gaonkar, former Gaondongrom sarpanch and sitting panch Ashok Velip and Panch Anand Velip.
