Upset with a credit society for failing to pay her rent over a period of two years, an elderly landlady is alleged to have burnt documents belonging to the Credit Society in Assonora.
The Colvale Police have registered an offence against the woman, who presently resides in Mumbai.
According to reports, the Ashtagandha Urban Co-operative Credit Society Ltd was shut for some time and the landlady was upset as the society had not paid her rent for two years, and her money which was deposited in the credit society also was blocked.
On Tuesday afternoon, the elderly woman opened the main door of the credit society, and allegedly brought out vouchers, FD receipts, account book, register and ledger books, audit report files, other files and documents.
She then placed these documents in the veranda in front of the branch and allegedly set them on fire. The documents were destroyed in the fire.
On getting news of the incident, officials of the credit society as well as the depositors and investors whose money was in the credit society, rushed to the site. Former vice-chairman of the credit society Digambar Parab later lodged a complaint in the Colvale police station.
The police have registered an offence under Sections 457, 435 and 427 of IPC. PI Vijay Rane and Rohan Madgaonkar are investigating the matter.
According to sources, the credit society was in losses and hence, the board of the credit society had locked all its branches. Assonora is the main branch of the credit society, which was started in the rental premises belonging to the suspect.
Police said the bank is in dispute with the customers and the government has appointed the Administrator, however the administrator has not taken the charge and the possession of the Society is with the old committee.
The flat owner who resides in Malad west, Mumbai committed trespass in the premises of society over the issue of nonpayment of rent for last two years and brought the valuable papers in compound area and set ablaze.
