Lockdown may get MMC councillors working even before council formed

VASCO

With elections to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) just over, newly elected councillors may have to start work in full throttle during the four-day lockdown even before the council is formed.

During the lockdown, the newly elected councillors would be expected to come on the field and help poor people in the port town, many of whom are daily-wage working-class workers, to provide them with some grocery items in case the lockdown is extended.

Councillors of the previous council had helped people during the lockdown last year and had played a key role in the supply and distribution of essential supplies to the needy.

There are 18 new faces in the present council and these new councillors will have to get into fieldwork immediately even though they may not have handled such a situation.

Anticipating an extension of lockdown, some newly elected councillors are already geared up to buy groceries in wholesale to offer to the people who may be daily wage workers.
