MARGAO
The monsoon is fast approaching, but the Margao Municipal New Market building, a Portuguese-era heritage structure, is still awaiting repairs and renovation.
The building was in the news in the last monsoons when a tin sheet was found hanging on the building as the heritage structure was found craving urgent attention from the civic body.
Though the issue over the repairs of the building was discussed by the municipal body, traders pointed out that the repair work is yet to commence.
New Market trader Vinod Shirodkar said the market building is a Portuguese-era building, craving attention from the civic body over the years.
“The building is in bad shape due to neglect. The MMC should take the assistance of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to get government funds to take up the repair work. In the alternative, the civic body should explore the possibility of building a new structure.
“The Margao MLA should try and get funds either from GSUDA or other government departments to refurbish the entire market building. The municipality should also explore the possibility of coming out with a new structure for the market,” Shirodkar added.
