A potentially catastrophic fire incident was narrowly avoided aboard the Marusagar Express, which was en route from Ernakulam to Ajmer, when one of its bogeys experienced brake binding issues, leading to the generation of fumes. The incident occurred approximately five kilometres away from Tivim railway station on Monday noon.
Bhaban Ghatge, representing the Konkan Railway Corporation, explained the cause, stating, "On account of brake binding (jamming of brakes) in one of the bogeys due to friction, fumes erupted in the bogey."
Fortunately, the quick response of the station staff at Tivim railway station prevented the situation from escalating into a full-blown fire. They promptly deployed fire extinguishers upon the train's arrival at the station, effectively extinguishing the flames.
Despite the successful intervention, the incident resulted in a delay of one hour for the Marusagar Express's onward journey.
