Municipal political wards are 25 but revenue wards are only 15

MARGAO

When the Margao Municipal Council was deliberating on the revenue recoveries at the Special meeting on Monday, a City Father was heard complaining that the civic administration has compiled the revenue data of only 15 wards when the Margao Municipal Council comprises of 25 wards.

It was only later the realization dawned that while the MMC consists of 25 political wards for the purpose of election, the revenue wards have not kept pace with the changing times.

For, blame it on apathy or simply indifference to rectify the glaring discrepancy, the taxation system shows only 15 municipal wards when the MMC comprises of 25 Municipal wards, indicating that around 10 Municipal wards have been amalgamated into the 15 wards for the purpose of taxation and revenue collection.

Margao Municipal Chief officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar conceded that the system need an adjustment, adding that the civic body will write to the NIC to work with the taxation section to bring about the changes. “This should not have happened in the first place when the Municipal wards have gone up to 25, the revenue wards continue to be 15”, the Chief officer added.

Sources in the know, however, reminded that successive Chief Officers have promised to effect the changes in the revenue wards to bring them on par with the 25 political wards, but in vain. “The system handling the taxation system has not undergone any changes when the Municipal wards have now risen to 25”, sources added.
