Action by the Goa Police has successfully ensured that sand mining has ceased in at least three of the four hotspots for sand mining that were reported to the High Court, the Goa River Sand Protectors Network informed the High Court.
The petitioners filed an affidavit before the Bombay High Court at Goa while the High Court also took on record an affidavit filed by the Goa Police but are awaiting an affidavit filed by the Chief Secretary concerning compliance by the state government on cracking down on illegal sand mining.
In April this year, the Bombay High Court at Goa has taken a serious view of the repeated instances of violation of orders and illegal sand mining especially in the Tiracol River and has asked the Pernem police inspector and the mamlatdar of Pernem to file detailed affidavits explaining how illegal mining activity is being conducted seemingly under their noses.
The matter will be heard next on June 22.
