The Opposition raised concerns about the government's silence on the issue of formalin in fish and alleged that there has been a lack of testing of fish, especially during the time of fishing ban when the likelihood of chemically contaminated fish entering the market is high.
During a discussion on the Food & Drugs Administration in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai pointed out that fish testing is not being conducted adequately.
"There is a need to resume comprehensive testing," he demanded and urged the government to increase the number of food inspectors and equip them with proper vehicles to monitor the food outlets that have increased manifold.
AAP MLA Venzy Viegas also expressed dissatisfaction with the existing provisions for checking formalin in fish stating it is insufficient.
Legislator Aleixo Reginald Lourenco further sought clarity from the government on whether it intends to take necessary measures to address this ongoing issue.
There have been apprehensions, particularly during the ban period, that fish brought into Goa are contaminated with the highly toxic chemical.
