Over 70% candidates lose their deposit

The just concluded election has thrown up interesting statistics. A notable one is that over 70 per cent of the 301 candidates who threw their hat into the poll ring lost their deposit.

Vinoda Palienkar, Pravin Zantye, Filip Neri Rodrigues, Wilfred D'Sa and Alina Saldanha are the five former prominent MLAs among the 212 candidates that lost their deposit.

In the 40 assembly constituencies, a total of 301 candidates had contested elections. Of this 70.43 per cent candidates failed to get the required votes and landed up losing their deposits.

As per rules, candidates who secure less than 1/6th of the votes polled in their respective constituencies stand to lose their deposit amount. The amount that the candidate needs to deposit at the time of filing nomination is Rs 10,000 and in case of SC/ST candidates it is Rs 5000.
