CANACONA
After cordoning off the accident-prone sharp curve with road safety fibre poles, the PWD has taken up the task of installing new crash barriers in place of the damaged barriers at Karmalghat in Canacona.
After delaying for nearly two weeks following the death of a Mumbai youth in a mishap, the PWD (NH) is finally temporarily installing crash barriers as a stop-gap arrangement. The old crash barriers were reduced to a heap of iron waste after frequent mishaps involving large and heavy vehicles.
Workers erected strong pillars and a JCB was pressed into service to install the crash barriers.
“The new crash barriers are iron-plated railings and are of a higher gauge, which is likely to prevent vehicles, especially the lighter vehicles, from falling off the narrow ghat-road,” informed a worker at the site.
The erection and restoration of crash barriers, which incidentally began on Thursday, continued on Friday as a JCB was pressed into service, and policemen were placed on either sides of the slope at Karmalghat, to regulate traffic along the route.
Meanwhile on Thursday, a loaded truck fell on its side off the Karmalghat road. However, police confirmed that no one was injured in the mishap.
