Qualification for Margao flyovers is vote bank: GF chief

MARGAO

Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai on Wednesday said that infrastructure projects in Margao are not considered on the basis of traffic or congestion, but vote bank.

Reacting to the Centre’s decision to give nod for the Victor Hosptial-La Flor flyover at Margao instead of approving the Comba flyover--a the congested railway crossing, Sardesdai said vote bank is the qualification for the Margao flyovers.

He said it is now crystal clear to Madgaonkars that the Victor Hospital flyover was approved over the crucial Comba one because the Double Engine Sarkar considered Baba’s vote bank and not any hard traffic data or scientific road management principles. “Such arbitrary, irrational and senseless decisions together with whimsical priorities and non-existent planning are systematically demolishing the very foundation of our revered Dambab’s Sthal, jeopardising its present, and erasing all hopes of safeguarding its future”, Sardesai said.

Pointing out that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured him on the floor of the Assembly that the government would accord top most priority for the Comba railway crossing flyover, the Fatorda  MLA said he would  raise the issue in the forthcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

“Let the Chief  Minister explain to Madgavkars and the people of Salcete how the Comba flyover did not receive priority from the government”, he said.

He added: “Let the Chief Minister explain what went wrong with the Comba flyover when the funds needed for both the Comba flyover and the Victor Hospital-La Flor hotel flyover is more or less the same. The Chief  Minister owes an explanation for the people of Margao and adjoining areas”.

He said he had demanded construction of the Comba flyover on priority since Comba plays to the city’s educational hub and the area sees movement of thousands of vehicles every day, especially during the peak school hours.
